It’s November: Time to Start Thinking About Spring!
The temps are falling, the clocks have rolled back and it’s time to plant bulbs for springtime color.
The daffodil is my very favorite bulb flower and the more there are, the more spectacular the view. This photo is of Daffodil Hill, in Northern California.
This famous garden started with plantings from homesteaders during the 19th century and has continued to expand intermittently ever since. At 3000′ elevation in the Sierra, it usually opens in mid- to late-March - and lasts only a few weeks. It varies greatly according to the Spring weather.
You may not want to plant this many bulbs, but here are a few tips for planting bulbs from gardening expert Charlie Nardozzi.
Tips for Planting Bulbs
- Add organic matter to the soil for nutrients and drainage.
- Plant en mass (by the hundreds if possible) for a spectacular show.
- Wear gloves when handling bulbs.
- Place shorter bulbs in the front of beds and borders.
- Try to have everything planted well before the ground freezes. Halloween is a good deadline to set, although I am usually planting extra tulips on Thanksgiving weekend.
- Mulch the planting area thoroughly to avoid heaving from wintertime thawing and freezing.
